Oscar nominations land, MovieGulp shrugs

We’re not going to sugarcoat this – the annual Hollywood orgy of self congratulation is on the way and the nominations have not impressed us.

Not only has First Man been ignored for the main categories, but Black Panther has received a Best Film nom, despite not even being the best Marvel movie of 2018.

Meanwhile, Bohemian Rhapsody, a movie so badly edited we wondered if we could improve it using some sticky tape and a biro, has received five nominations including – almost un-fucking-believably – an editing nomination.

Black Panther‘s nomination feels like a response to the fully justified #OscarsSoWhite hashtag that kicked off in 2016. And while it’s refreshing to see a Disney blockbuster embrace African culture, the film is very far from awards-worthy.

Still, it’s unlikely either Rhapsody or Panther will win, particularly with the former suffering from the ‘Bryan Singer is a child rapist’ accusation fallout.

Instead, expect the Academy to play it safe with A Star Is Born. Cooper is a shoe-in for Best Actor and the remake should take Best Film, with only The Favourite offering up any realistic competition.

MovieGulp’s own choice for film of the year – First Man – did manage seven nominations, but despite excelling in so many areas, apparently it wasn’t good enough to earn a Best Picture nom. Which is ludicrous.
